IBN VERGA SALOMON (fin XVe-déb. XVIe s.)

De la vie même de l’historien juif que fut Salomon ibn Verga, on sait peu de chose. Il reçut une formation rabbinique et philosophique, apprit la littérature espagnole et latine de son temps et fut chargé, en 1487, après la prise de Málaga par les Rois Catholiques, de réunir les fonds nécessaires pour acquitter la rançon des Juifs capturés. Lorsque les Juifs furent expulsés d’Espagne en 1492, Salomon ibn Verga passa à Lisbonne et fut atteint par l’opération de conversion forcée de 1497; il ne put gagner l’Italie que vers 1506.

Son livre Šebet Yehuda (Le Fléau de Juda ), publié à Andrinople vers 1550, est un ouvrage historique sur les persécutions subies par le peuple juif depuis la destruction du second Temple jusqu’au XVIe siècle. Utilisant des chroniques médiévales hébraïques, castillanes et latines, Salomon ibn Verga relate les faits, construit des dialogues et colloques, s’efforce de fournir une explication autre que surnaturelle de l’histoire. Le problème majeur qu’il affronte est celui des causes de l’expulsion des Juifs d’Espagne. Il est ainsi amené à s’interroger sur les raisons de la haine populaire dont souffre le peuple juif. La jalousie économique, le fanatisme religieux et surtout l’exil des Juifs parmi les nations expliquent, selon lui, les persécutions dont ils sont victimes. La foi intense manifestée par les Juifs et leur crédulité face aux prétendants messianiques seraient des facteurs négatifs les privant de moyens naturels de défense.

L’ouvrage (édition critique en hébreu Sefer Šebet Yehuda le rabbi Selomo ibn Verga par Azriel Shohet, introd. I. Baer, Jérusalem, 1947) tranche, par ses perspectives critiques, sur les chroniques médiévales. Il montre comment les conceptions de la Renaissance pouvaient influer sur un auteur juif méditant sur les destinées de son peuple. Il brosse essentiellement une fresque de la vie des Juifs médiévaux dans divers pays, et surtout en Espagne.
